Persimmon Frequency: oversized type crossed by a Lissajous ribbon
Persimmon Frequency is a radio-series poster in which the word is the picture. The Oversized layout blows Frequency up in black grotesk across the whole width of a persimmon orange sheet, and a Lissajous figure with a 3:4 ratio, pushed to the maximum Shape scale of 140, sweeps through it as a ribbon of 48 hairlines. Where the ribbon meets a letter it is cut back by a thin orange gap, so the strands seem to thread behind the type.
Make it yours
Retune the ratio
Symmetry and Resonance are the two frequencies of the Lissajous figure, 3 and 4 here. Try 1 and 2 for a single figure eight, or 5 and 6 for a tight lattice of crossings behind the headline.
Slide the crossings
Phase offsets one frequency against the other, so the points where the ribbon crosses itself move. 90 gives the broad X seen here, and steps of 10 or 15 degrees are enough to change how the strands meet the letters.
FAQ
How large can the headline get in the Oversized layout?
Oversized fits the Headline as large as the sheet allows, on up to three lines across the full width, and stands it near the foot. A single word like Frequency fills the measure; longer titles break onto more lines and shrink to fit, so short words give the biggest letters.
How it works
Choose a layout and a line system
Combine one of 5 layouts, Swiss, Split, Cover, Caption or Oversized, with one of 5 equations, or start from one of 17 looks such as Kunsthalle, Riso Duo or Night Conference.
Write and set your copy
Edit the Eyebrow, Headline, Body and Footer, choose a Grotesk, Condensed, Wide or Serif Typeface, and wrap one word of the headline in asterisks to set it in serif italic.
