Bauhaus Revisited: overprinted black and red rings on a Swiss grid
Bauhaus Revisited is a centenary poster that trades fine engraving for a few heavy strokes. A Lissajous figure with equal frequencies and a Phase of 90 closes into a perfect circle, and 14 copies at Line width 2.6 become a target of concentric rings. The Overprint finish splits them across a black plate and a red plate set half a grid module apart, multiplied where they cross, above Dessau 1926 in full-width black grotesk.
Make it yours
Balance stroke and count
Overprint hands alternate strands to Ink and Accent on two offset plates. With 14 Copies at a heavy line each ring reads as a printed stroke; raise Copies to 40 and lower Line width to 0.8, and the two colors begin to shimmer.
Break the circle
The rings stay round because Symmetry and Resonance are both 2 and Phase sits at 90. Nudge Phase to 60 and they flatten into tilted ellipses, or set Resonance to 4 for nested figure-eight loops.
FAQ
How do two plates half a module apart create the Bauhaus look?
Overprint divides the strands between an Ink plate and an Accent plate and slides the second one half a grid column sideways and one row up. On light paper the plates multiply, so black and red darken where they overlap, like the hand-pulled color separations of 1920s print workshops.
How it works
Choose a layout and a line system
Combine one of 5 layouts, Swiss, Split, Cover, Caption or Oversized, with one of 5 equations, or start from one of 17 looks such as Kunsthalle, Riso Duo or Night Conference.
Write and set your copy
Edit the Eyebrow, Headline, Body and Footer, choose a Grotesk, Condensed, Wide or Serif Typeface, and wrap one word of the headline in asterisks to set it in serif italic.
Tune the drawing and use it
