Obsidian facet: a dark, glassy gem with near-still reflections
Obsidian facet barely flows at all, and that is the point. The gem, enlarged a little to Size 106 and turned to Rotate Y 45, is built from flat facets, and with Distortion cut to 5 and Softness to 18 each plane flips between dark and lit as a whole, with no ripple. A slate grey-violet Ink and a deep aubergine Accent make the stone almost black against a pale lilac Light color.
Make it yours
Make the facets flash more
With Bands at 3, only a few planes are lit at a time. Raise Bands to 6 or 7 and more facets catch the light as the reflection sweeps past, which feels closer to cut crystal.
Lighten it into smoky quartz
Ink is a dark slate, which is why the gem reads black. Pick a mid grey-lilac for Ink and bring Lighting up from 100 to about 140 for a translucent, smoky stone on the same pale backdrop.
FAQ
Does the Obsidian facet preset still animate?
It does, at the default Speed of 24, but the motion is subtle. Flat facets and a Distortion of 5 mean you see planes brightening and dimming in turn, not flowing stripes. Set Speed to 0 if you want a completely still render.
How it works
