Twisted Squares: burgundy and bone squares wound toward the center
Twisted Squares nests burgundy and bone squares one inside another in bands of equal width, then turns them more and more toward the middle. With a Twist distortion field at Spatial depth 36, the innermost squares rotate by close to sixty degrees while the outer ones stay almost square to the frame, which gives the stack a spiralling, drilled-in look. On Breathe the twist relaxes and tightens again every 7.5 seconds.
Make it yours
Wind it tighter
Spatial depth is the twist at the center. Raise it to 100 and the inner squares turn by about 160 degrees, curling their corners into tight arms; lower it to 15 for a barely tilted stack.
Round off the stack
Mark shape is Square. Switch it to Round and the twist seems to vanish, because circles look the same however far they turn; raise Wave distortion to give each ring lobes and the swirl shows again.
FAQ
Why do the inner squares of Twisted Squares seem to sink?
Each square is turned a little more than the one outside it, so the corners trace a curve toward the middle. The eye reads that steady rotation as depth, like looking down a twisted shaft, and the breathing motion makes the shaft seem to deepen and rise.
How it works
Choose a starting point
Start from one of 16 looks such as Riley Current, Cobalt Tunnel or Moiré Twins, or pick one of 8 pattern geometries, from Halftone and Checkerboard to Moiré and Weave.
Bend the pattern
Pick a Mark shape and a Distortion field such as Lens, Pinch, Fold or Twist, set Pattern density, Mark weight, Spatial depth, Wave distortion and Color separation, then drag the artwork to position it.
Loop it and use it
Press Play to run a seamless Flow, Breathe or Counterflow loop, set the two inks, Light color and Backlight, then sign in with a free UX Pilot account to use it on the canvas or export it.
