Black Mirror: a horse head traced in hairline strip light
Black Mirror is watch-ad noir: a chromium horse head sits in a black room (#050505), and almost all you see of it is a few hairline reflections from the Strip lights rig plus a dim scrim overhead. The metal itself is ordinary chromium grey, but it reads as black chrome because there is so little bright studio for it to mirror. Glossy floor repeats the head upside down below it, and Roughness 3 keeps every line razor thin.
Make it yours
Add one more line of light
Light panels is set to 3, so one of the four strips in this rig stays switched off. Raise it to 4 for one more hairline reflection, or go higher to fill the dark arc with thin strips, at the cost of some of the mystery.
Lift the silhouette off the black
With a near-black Backdrop the head can vanish on dim screens. Exposure at 125 already drives the strips hard, so instead of raising it further try a deep charcoal Backdrop like #1A1A1C to separate the floor from the shape.
FAQ
How do I get black chrome instead of silver chrome?
Keep Metal at a neutral chromium grey and make the room dark: a near-black Backdrop, the Strip lights rig and only a few Light panels. Polished metal shows what surrounds it, so a dark studio with thin lights turns the same chrome glossy black.
How it works
Choose a form
Pick one of 10 built-in shapes, try a sample model such as the Marble bust, Lion head or Conch shell, or import a GLB, OBJ or STL model up to 20 MB.
Light the studio
Choose a Lighting rig such as Studio softboxes, Strip lights, Color gels or Horizon '84, set the Floor to Contact shadow, Glossy floor or Floating, and pick the Backdrop, Metal and Gel light colors.
